The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association has named Irving Materials, Tennessee, as the 2011 Concrete Cares Award recipient. The award program was created in October 2010 by NRMCA’s Manufacturers, Products & Services Division to recognize outstanding contributions in community service by an NRMCA producer member company.
Since 2002, IMI-Tennessee and its president, John Curtis, have provided generous and steadfast support to the Our Kids Clinic, which provides medical evaluations and crisis counseling for children and families struggling with the trauma of child sex abuse. Since IMI became the Title Sponsor of the Kids Klassic Golf tournament, IMI employees have raised over $500,000 to support Our Kids. Most recently, IMI responded to Our Kid’s call for assistance when the entire lower level of the Our Kids building was flooded in May 2010. IMI loaned personnel and equipment to help with clean up and assisted in securing construction materials at a drastically reduced price. They also recruited other professionals to design an intervention on the outside of the building utilizing previous concrete and concrete curbs to prevent the threat of future water damage to the building.
“Our champions at IMI help ensure that children and families find help, hope and healing, and the community is strengthened by having the very best services for its children,” said Sue Fort White, executive director of Our Kids, Inc. “IMI exemplifies the best of what can be accomplished when generosity, passion and resourcefulness are committed in service to the most vulnerable among us.”
With ready mixed concrete plants in almost every community in America, NRMCA member companies are making a real difference. For this first year of the program, NRMCA received nine entries. They detailed ready mixed concrete companies involvement in breast cancer awareness, support for local children’s programs, involvement with ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover and work with local schools on environmental issues and career development just to name a few.
